Stay close to me… Wait, that’s not what we’re doing here. We are discussing the deliciousness that is – red wine (not the UB40 song, unfortunately)! Here at Blu’s Cocktail & Wine Bar we pride ourselves on our wine collection, from red, to white, to sparkling. In this blog we will be discussing the different kinds of red wine, our favourites as well as their potential health benefits. All of this and more ahead!
Red wine is a type of wine made from darker coloured grape varieties and can range from an intense violet colour which is typically a feature of younger wines, to a brick red which is indicative of a more mature wine. Wine gets its colour from the skin of grapes and nearly all red wines are made using one species of grape.
You may have read or heard that drinking red wine can be considered good for you. Well, you are in luck, because this I actually true! Many researchers think that drinking red wine in small amounts regularly is better for you than not drinking at all. Of the polyphenols present in wine (tannin, colour pigment, wine aromas, resveratrol and many others), the most abundant in wine for health reasons are Procyanidins. This compound is specifically associated with improving heart health and longevity.
Young red wines are better for you than old red wines. Although older wines may taste better depending on your tastes, young red wines contain higher tannin and colour levels meaning that they are scientifically more beneficial to your health. So, next time you are looking for a red wine, look out for more vibrant and opaque wines as this tends to be indicative of their age.
